Activities of the Society primarily encompass five fields:
- Organisation of conferences and international meetings,
- Publication of the journal “Die Musikforschung” (appears four times a year) and other contributions to musicology,
- coordination of academic projects,
- support of academic interactions internationally,
- representation of musicological concerns in education policy.
Within the Society, there are a number of field units and committees, who collaborate in specific areas of research and common concerns. The annual conferences and meetings of the Society also offer a platform for young academics to report on their own research.
The German Musicological Society is a registered non-profit organisation. The governing bodies of the Society are the general assembly, the managing committee, and the advisory committee. The committee’s office is placed in Kassel.
All individuals, institutions, companies and associations within Germany and abroad are eligible for membership if they are interested in the aims of the Society.
The membership fee is at present:

Membership fees and donations to the Society may be partially refunded by German tax. Members receive a copy of the journal “Die Musikforschung” (Music Research) free of charge, and they have access to the members-only areas of the homepage http://musikforschung.de, containing many useful pieces of information. The charter of the Society is available on demand. The financial year equals the calendar year.
